GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- - The Heroes Behind the Badge Blood Drive is a friendly competition between the Grand Junction Fire Department and Law Enforcement Officers to see who can get more people to donate blood and vote for their organization after they do so.
The blood drive falls on National EMS week, and two firefighters came to St. Mary's Blood Center to donate their own blood. "Blood is a commodity that everybody needs... The more blood we can get to donate, the more lives people can save," says Zach Leyda, a Grand Junction Firefighter and Paramedic.
Since the Fire Department and Law Enforcement Officers interact with those dealing with trauma, they understand why blood is such a necessity. "We show up to a lot of emergency scenes and a lot of those involve pretty significant trauma which result in the need for blood once they get to the E.R. So, I know that my part here will certainly help somebody down the road," says Sean Hazelhurst, a Grand Junction Firefighter.
The challenge ends on May 25, so be sure and get out to donate blood and vote at St. Mary's Blood Center if you want to participate.
