Fruita, Colorado - As of 5:15 pm Friday, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office says the Skipper Island Fire is 100% contained.
While the fire is under control, Xcel Energy is going to do some utility pole repairs that will require I-70 between Loma and Fruita to be shut down for a couple of hours.
The fire burned more than 220 acres of land, mostly within the Horsethief Canyon State Wildlife Area. No homes or structures were damaged and no injuries occurred because of the fire. The biggest issues were the closure of I-70 for many hours Thursday evening and power outages that at times cut off electricity to the entire town of Fruita and several areas in The Redlands.
The MCSO says the fire was started by an illegal campfire in the Horsethief SWA. Camping is not allowed in the area. There has been no information yet on whether any charges will be filed.
