Canal Search Underway in Palisade for Man Who Fled Traffic Stop

Suspect seen going underwater but not resurfacing

PALISADE, Colo. - Search and recovery efforts are underway at a Mesa County canal for a man who reportedly fled from law enforcement during a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near Palisade.

Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol said they stopped a female driver and a male passenger traveling in white Honda Accord with California plates in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near exit 42.

Troopers said they had probable cause to search the car and recovered contraband, including a pillow case filled with marijuana.

While the search was underway the male passenger fled on foot to the south. Authorities said he entered Highline Canal and was swimming away with difficulty.

He was seen going underwater shortly before 6:40 p.m. As far as authorities know, he has not resurfaced.

Troopers said the operation would likely become a recovery effort, considering the canal is estimated to be moving at a rate of 3 miles per hour.

The female driver is currently in custody.
