Grand Junction, CO - UPDATE: The public defender appointed to Kalab Prettyman requested more time to review the case, delaying the return hearing until April 2nd.
Grand Junction Police have identified a suspect in the shooting death of 37-year-old Melissa Prettyman as 37-year-old Kalab Allen Prettyman of Grand Junction. Police say Melissa was Kalab's wife. Kalab Prettyman has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder.
According to a police affidavit released Monday evening, police went to a home at 270 E. Parkview Drive, in the Orchard Mesa area, Sunday evening, after receiving two 911 calls from people saying Kalab had called them and told them he had shot his wife.
Police say when they arrived at the house they found Kalab in the garage and that he was uncooperative and had to Tasered before he was detained.
The affidavit then says Grand Junction police officers searched the house for injured persons and found Melissa on the floor of the bathroom in the master bedroom deceased with a bullet wound in her head,
Police said in the affidavit that people who know the couple reported to them that Kalab suffered from depression, had alcohol issues, and had pointed a handgun at Melissa in the past when they had arguments.
A friend of Melissa's told police she had talked to her earlier in the day and that Melissa had reportedly told Kalab that she wanted a divorce.
Police also say that Kalab, while in custody and being processed by a police lab technician for evidence "spontaneously stated 'I shot my wife'."
Kalab Prettyman was booked into the Mesa County Sheriff's Detention Center, where he is currently being held.
