Coloradans Brace for Winter

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - This Friday, we're expected to have one of the heaviest snowfalls of the season.

As we head into winter, Coloradans can expect to see some pretty harsh weather conditions.

"I was just coming from Benge's and I bought myself a pair of boots," said Paula Dutton, Mesa County Resident

As much as many of us may love the snow, not everyone is prepared.

"I get really excited that it's going to happen, but then forget that it's freezing outside," said Mesa County Resident Joee Stephan.

It's an exciting time for many, but those with the Colorado State Patrol said it's important to be prepared.

This time last year, there were 85 motor vehicle accidents in Mesa County.

"If it is snowing out, you need to increase your following distance," said Trooper Josh Zortman with the Colorado State Patrol.

However, they're not talking about your average length.

"The normal distance would be like 3 to 4 seconds. They need to increase that to 8 to 10 seconds," said Zortman.

If you're heading out on a longer road trip, they said to remember to bring blankets, coats, water, and some food.

Of course, you should also make sure to stock up on your winter gear.

"Lots of people are coming in looking for base layers and looking for several layers of clothing to maintain their core temperature," said Mark Feil with Cabela's.

All in all, they said not to let the harsh conditions scare you. In fact, may believe it's just one of the benefits of living here.
