GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- - The Grand Junction High School Academic Team is hosting its annual Community Knowledge Bowl fundraiser on Saturday, April 15.
The Academic Team puts on this event to demonstrate what one of their competitions is like. Community and business members form teams and compete in a written round of 60 questions, and then an oral round of buzzing in to answer 50 questions. The team with the most points at the end wins. "Because people don't know what we do and so to have them actually go through it and play - it's eye opening," says Coady Shawcroft, the Academic Team Head Coach.
The event is a fundraiser to help the team travel to two national competitions this spring. This is the 19th year a Grand Junction High School Academic Team has won the state championships. "Hard work really does pay off. I mean, they put in something like 1,100 over just this calendar year to get where they are. And so because they've worked so hard, that's why they succeed. So it's less about the knowledge, and for me, it's about the lessons that they learn," says Shawcroft.
The Academic Team has advanced to the semi-final stage of the Matchwits competition, which will air on April 9.
