'Congressional App Challenge' Promotes STEM Education

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Congressman Scott Tipton is giving students on the Western Slope a chance to show off their digital skills and 'code' their way into the national spotlight, with the 2016 Congressional App Challenge.

The competition encourages students to learn how to code by creating any type of software application (app) they'd like, on any platform (mobile phone, tablet, etc.) they'd like.

Aiming to promote computer science and STEM education in schools, students are judged on the quality and implementation of the idea, as well as, demonstrated excellence of coding and programming skills.

Congressman Tipton issued the following statement, regarding the Congressional App Challenge:

“Technology continues to evolve, and in order for the U.S. to remain competitive in the global economy, we need a strong STEM workforce. I’m happy to participate in the App Challenge to give kids in the Third Congressional District a chance to learn about coding in a fun way. I’m hopeful that the challenge will inspire students to become more interested in computer science. And who knows, we could find out that we have the founder of the next big tech startup in our district!”

Students may compete individually, or in a group up to four, with at least two teammates residing in the participating congressional district.

All ages and experience levels are welcome to compete, but students are not allowed to participate if they have already graduated from high school.

Submissions must be original, appropriate and solely owned by the contestant(s).

All entries must be submitted by November 2, 2016.

Winners will be honored by their Congressional Representative and have their app featured on the United States House of Representative website
