Firefighter Conquers Cancer and Returns to Team

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- - Captain Brian Cherveny is back on duty with the Grand Junction Fire department after he was taken out of work at the end of November.

At the time Cherveny was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Palatine Tonsil and had to undergo two surgeries to remove the disease.

"How am I going to take care of my family, can I go to work again, am I going to be able to get back in the front seat of the job that I love" said Cherveny.

Now living cancer free he is back to fighting fires after more than 3 months off duty, and he said this experience has prompted himself and others with the GJFD to launch a campaign aimed at reducing the risk of cancer while on the job.
