Grand Valley Turns Black Friday to Gray Thursday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - For hundreds of folks across the Grand Valley, Thanksgiving isn't the only holiday they're celebrating on Thursday.

They're going from fighting for turkey to fighting for the best deals.

"I'm a single mom so that's how I afford Christmas and my son's birthday [which] is two weeks before Christmas." Carrie Wingfield said, who traveled from Delta with her mother to shop Thursday.

Black Friday turns into Gray Thursday with Mesa Mall opening from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. JC Penny opens at 2 p.m. and they're going 32 hours straight until 10 p.m. Friday night.

"We hired right around 40 extra employees to help us through the holiday season." David Ross said, the General Manager for JC Penny's Grand Junction outlet.

Hundreds of folks poured into the mall Thursday night for shopping. For some of the folks News Channel 5 talked to, they prefer to get out than to stay at home.

"Grandma doesn't do online." said Anne Wingfield, who traveled from Hotchkiss to shop with her daughter, Carrie, "[I'm] the older generation and I don't like online. I have to feel, touch and look."

All businesses will be open Friday with Mesa Mall's doors opening at 10 a.m.
