Navy SEAL with Ties to Mesa County Killed in Parachute Accident

Remington J. Peters passed away following weekend incident in New Jersey

MESA COUNTY, Colo. - A Navy SEAL from western Colorado has died following a weekend accident in New Jersey.

Officials say Remington Peters, 27, from Mesa County was a member of an elite Navy parachute team called the Leap Frogs.

Shortly after noon on Sunday the team was conducting a jump into Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, as part of some planned activities for Fleet Week.

Navy officials say the parachute for Peters failed to open and he landed in the nearby Hudson River.

Peters, who attended Grand Junction High School, was pronounced dead about an hour after the incident.
