GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The American Red Cross is asking for your help in installing free smoke alarms. It's part of a nationwide initiative to ultimately save lives.
The campaign will take place September 23 through October 15, with the end goal of installing 100,000 free smoke alarms in over 100 major cities across the country.
On September 30th, an event will take place in the downtown area right here in Grand Junction. Volunteers with the American Red Cross of Western Colorado will install free smoke alarms and talk with families about fire safety.
"Since we launched this campaign three years ago, we've installed nearly 3,000 smoke alarms in our chapter jurisdiction. I'm always surprised at people who don't have smoke alarms, don't have functional smoke alarms, or haven't tested them," Eric Myers with the American Red Cross said.
Since the initiative began in 2014, Red Cross volunteers have installed almost one million free smoke alarms.
