State Shuts Down Sunset Mesa Funeral Home

Business Is Target Of State and FBI Probes

KREX 5 News has confirmed that the State of Colorado has shut down Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors, the Montrose funeral home that has been under both an FBI and Colorado investigation.

This comes just one week after the FBI raided Sunset Mesa.

While the FBI has not released details of why they conducted the raid, the state Office of Funeral and Crematory Registration says it has been investigating the funeral home following several consumer complaints.

Family members have told KREX that they are concerned that cremated remains they were given by Sunset Mesa may not actually be the remains of their loved ones.

Sunset Mesa has been under scrutiny for also running a donor services business out of the funeral home. That business provides body parts for educational and scientific research. Other funeral directors in Montrose and Grand Junction have questioned the ethics of running both types of services out of the same building.

KREX 5 News on Tuesday evening confirmed that the Colorado Division of Professions and Occupations has suspended Sunset Mesa's license to operate.

This is a developing story, and we will bring you more details as we get them.
