Shooting Leaves Local Man Dead

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- - A local man is dead and two men are in custody following a late shooting Wednesday night.

The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the James Trailer Park off of 28 1/4 Road.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department responded to the scene following reports of multiple gun shots and upon arrival officers found Dion Nixon, 38, with gun shot wounds in his abdomen.

Dixon was transported to an area hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries, and the Mesa County Coroners Office ruled his death a homicide.

Richard Byrd, 48, and Rufus Billups, 41, both of Grand Junction, were taken into custody this morning in connection with the fatal shooting without incident.

The suspects mug shots are not yet available and authorities say they will not be released until additional witness interviews are conducted.

Furthermore the arrest documents for both Byrd and Billups have been sealed by the court.
