With less than three weeks remaining until the Colorado Mesa football team opens the 2017 season, the Mavericks held their first scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday.
Saturday was one of three scrimmages CMU will hold before their season opening game on August 31st. The other two scrimmages will be August 17th and 22nd. The scrimmage was quite chippy, and the Mavs see their high intensity at practice as great preparation to begin the season.
"I think what you see is our guys have a very high expectation and I think we've noticed that throughout the entire camp," said head coach Russ Martin. "They know we have a chance to be pretty good and so I think they expect great things out of themselves, and I think it's great energy, and I think also they're great in supporting each other."
"We're all competing out there hard," said quarterback Eystin Salum. "People are competing for spots at every position. So a little chippiness is always good because that means our team, we want it. We want it bad. So that's always a good thing to have."
The Mavericks host Western State to open their 2017 season on August 31st. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. at Stocker Stadium.
