Colorado Mesa softball is the top ranked team in the nation, according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll.
It's the first number one ranking in program history. The Mavericks tore through their non-conference schedule and are now mowing down RMAC opponents. Last weekend, Mesa outscored Adams State 57-9 over the four game series. Of mesa's 18 wins eight have come by the run-rule. Even with all the success so far, the Mavs are still humble about the recognition.
"It's a great honor to have that and everything, but that's not what we're trying to get to," junior infielder Kaila Jacobi said. "We're trying to get to number one at the end of the season. Right now, it's awesome, it's great. I hope it doesn't get to our heads and we keep playing the softball that we play."
"We're very humble and very appreciative of the opportunity," Head Coach Ben Garcia said. "We really know we've got a lot of work to do still. Polls come and go and you just never know how you're going to finish."
No. 1 Mesa and No. 3 Dixie State are the only undefeated teams in the top 25 ranking at 18-0. North Georgia is ranked second. No. 4 Angelo State is 19-1. The Rambelles only loss came from the Mavericks earlier in the season.
Mesa's in the middle of 12 game road trip heading to New Mexico Highlands this weekend. The Cowgirls are 0-7 in RMAC play and 3-12 overall. The four game series starts at noon this Saturday in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
