High school baseball kicked off Thursday from the Valley with an annual tradition: the start of the 2018 Bill Fanning Memorial Classic.
The three-day season opening event is named in honor of Grand Junction's coach of 35 years, who led the Tigers to more than 400 wins in his tenure and three state titles.
Grand Junction could've used Fanning's help on Thursday, blanked 10-0 against Horizon High School at Suplizio field. Central High School took an early lead against Rampart and survived a late rally, winning their season opener 9-8. Rock Canyon overwhelmed Fruita during Day 1, driving in 5 runs in the 5th to win 11-0 in a five inning mercy.
Day 2 of the Classic begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. between Rock Canyon and Central at Suplizio Field. Case Ketchum added three goals and an assist to the Maverick scoring.
