Small ball and big arms earned Colorado Mesa head coach Chris Hanks his 800th career win, as the Mavericks shut out the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions 2-0 Friday afternoon.
Junior right-hander Kyle Leahy (3-0) fanned a career-high 17 in his complete game shutout, giving up just 4 hits and no walks.
The Maverick bats earned the win in the 5th inning. Caleb Farmer singled to lead off the inning. Zach McLeod laid down a perfect bunt down the 1st baseline to reach safely. Will Dixon moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt before Tyler Sandoval drove both baserunners in.
The win was 20 years in the making for Chris Hanks, who started his Division II head coaching career with the Mavericks in February of 1999. His all time record is 800-333, with a .706 winning percentage.
Coach Hanks will search for win 801 when the Mavericks and Mountain Lions continue their season tomorrow, beginning with a doubleheader at 1pm.
