State Champ Orchard Mesa Headed to Regional Tournament

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Orchard Mesa Major All Stars dominated the Colorado state softball tournament last weekend, now all that stands in the way of a trip to the Little League Softball World Series is the regional tournament in Waco, Texas.

The girls had a big 20-12 win over Arapahoe to claim the state title.

"It was pretty cool," said catcher Jordan Bauer. "It was pretty exciting."

"It feels pretty amazing," said third baseman Asunta  Mendicelli. "I've done all stars for three years and never made it past state."

Regionals are a first for all the girls, but with regionals come a higher level of talent to go up against.

"The teams in Texas are going to be good," said shortstop Chloe Raisch.  "At state the pitchers weren't that fast, so I feel like the pitchers are going to be a lot faster."

The coaching staff, however, views the challenge as an opportunity.

"I expect these girls to respond they way they have for us coaches all year long," said Head Coach Randy Raisch.  "They thrive off each other, they lift each other up.  Is it a different competition level there? Of course it is, but we're ready to go shock them.  The coaches believe in them, I think the girls believe in themselves."

Six teams from five states make up the Southwest Region.  It's a double elimination tournament.  The winner goes to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon.

Orchard Mesa's first game is on Friday.
