Week Five of high school football began league play for some teams, but Central and Montrose played their final non-conference game in Montrose Friday night.
On a rainy, windy, and cool night in Montrose, both teams had trouble holding onto the ball. After back to back fumbles, Cade Atwood ran it in from a few yards out to give the Indians a 7-0 lead. Late in the first quarter, after another Central fumble, Sam Collins gave the Indians a 14-0 lead with a touchdown run.
The Indians kept up the scoring for a 35-6 homecoming win. Montrose begins league play against Vista Ridge next Friday. Central goes to Pueblo South to start league play next Saturday.
In Rifle, the Bears won their third straight game with a 42-20 win over Conifer. Levi Warfel ran in a Bears touchdown late in the first quarter to put Rifle up 14-6. Tanner Vines also ran in a touchdown for the Bears. Rifle begins league play next Friday when they go to Battle Mountain.
League play started for 1A and 2A Friday night. Delta falls to 1-4 this season with a 26-7 loss to Pagosa Springs.
Sixth ranked Paonia opened league play with a 49-8 win over Cedaredge. The Eagles go to 4-1.
Olathe wins their league opener 47-17 over Grand Valley.
The Aspen Skiers continue their undefeated season with a league-opening 34-28 victory over Coal Ridge.
