Heading into league play the Fruita Monument Wildcats admitted they were a young team, but judging by what they've been bringing to the table this season, they don't show the markings of a young team.
Right now, Fruita sits at the top of the Southwestern League at 5-0, is riding a six game win streak, and won 10 out of its last 11 games. Head Coach Ray McLennan said the success is a combination of a lot of things, but mostly the fact these guys step up when they're called upon.
"We've been able to plug different guys in depending on situations and get some good matchups with our guys," said McLennan. "Some left handed hitters have hit very well in spots. We've used guys as pinch hitters from time to time and they've been successful, so it's been a combination of a lot of different things that have led to our success."
The Wildcats also cracked the top 10 rankings for 5A at eighth in the state. They can clinch the Southwestern League title and an auto bid in the state tournament with one more win. They'll have a chance to do that Friday afternoon at Montrose High School. Game starts at 4 p.m.
