SALT LAKE CITY– A Colorado energy company has laid off a third of its workforce in southeast Utah. Most of those employees worked at White Mesa Mill, the last conventional uranium mill operating in the United States.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Energy Fuels Inc. laid off 24 of its 79 employees. Low global uranium prices have pushed the mill to primarily process low-grade radioactive waste from across the country.
Mill officials and a Utah congressman blamed foreign subsidies and state-run companies abroad for undercutting American uranium companies.
