DENVER (AP) — Denver police are investigating after they say a man fired a flare gun into his car outside a police station. Police say the contents of the car were soaked with gasoline but nothing ignited on Sunday. Thirty-seven-year-old Derick Smialek was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment and arson. Police are looking at whether he intended to cause an explosion. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday but officials said during the virtual hearing that his appearance would be delayed because he was undergoing surgery. Authorities haven’t said why he needed surgery. It was not known if Smialek has a lawyer yet.
