Police: Boy shot sister with mom’s shotgun found on couch

Colorado News

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (AP) — Police say a 7-year-old boy who accidentally shot and killed his 3-year-old sister in suburban Denver found his mother’s loaded shotgun on the couch in the home’s family room.

According to the mother’s arrest affidavit, 3-year-old Ruby Jackson was shot in the chest as she played “swords” with her older brother at their home in Westminster on Tuesday. Ruby was using a broomstick, but at some point her brother picked up the .12 gauge shotgun. Michaela Harman told police that as soon as she heard the single shot she remembered that she had left the shotgun leaning against the couch. The public defender’s office did not return a telephone call seeking comment on the allegations.
