GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo.– If you happen to spot smoke North of Interstate 70 in the Rifle area, there’s no need to be alarmed.
A prescribed burn is being conducted in Garfield County, and smoke is visible from the Roan Plateau west of Rifle, particularly on windy afternoons.
A spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management says the smoke is a result of smoldering in unburned vegetation, within the perimeter of the blaze.
Firefighters ignited the 600-acre burn in late September to improve big game habitat and promote new aspen growth.
Officials are assuring the public the fire is not expanding, and firefighters are on-scene to monitor the burn.
