GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — At Grand River Academy’s online campus, all the learning takes place virtually. For some students, online learning just works better, but it wouldn’t work without great online teachers like Kyle Carmichael, and he’s this month’s D51 Golden Apple winner.
Mr. Carmichael’s class is made up of students with significant support needs, and for his students, not having the distractions that exist in a traditional classroom allows them to thrive. He said, “They are able to be themselves without all the pressures they get from a regular school.”
Mr. Carmichael’s was nominated by one of his students parents, who told me he’s dedicated to helping kids build confidence, try new things, and make sure they feel valued. He told us, “I think it’s important for our students to know that they’re just like everyone else. That they can do things that everyone else does.”
While online school isn’t for everyone, watching his students excel in a virtual environment is what Mr. Carmichael finds rewarding. He said, “I think that’s where the real rewards come from, is watching our kids grow. And watching their self confidence grow, and being themselves. I think that’s one of the most rewarding parts of this, is just really watching the kids thrive in this environment.”
Thank you Mr. Carmichael for being an outstanding educator, and congratulations for winning a Golden Apple award.
