GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) arrested Wayne VanMeter, 41, on warrants of 1st Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft and 2nd Degree Burglary, and a Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) warrant for Theft.
On Dec. 17, deputies located VanMeter at a hotel on the 700 block of Horizon Drive. When deputies went to apprehend VanMeter, he ran. A deputy pursued on foot while other units nearby drove into the area. According to the MCSO report, “VanMeter abruptly changed directions and ran in front of an unmarked patrol vehicle. The deputy driving was not able to stop in time and struck him.”
An ambulance was immediately called to the scene. VanMeter was transported to the hospital and treated for his injuries.
The traffic accident is still under investigation by members of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the GJPD Traffic Unit.
Following the incident, a gun was recovered from the scene that is believed to belong to the suspect. VanMeter is now also facing a charge of Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender.
