MESA COUNTY, Colo. — District 51 middle and high schools have pushed class start times forward.
The new times went in effect today to kick off the 2019 school year.
School at Grand Junction High School used to start at 7:20, but now starts at 8 a.m. and gets out at 3:15 p.m.
D-51 added the extra time to their student’s sleep schedules for one main reason: teens naturally have trouble falling asleep before 11 p.m.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends 8-10 hours of sleep a night, but after homework and extra curricular activities, many students were not getting their fill.
The students, of course, are pretty happy about the change.
