City Secures $600,000 Grant for New Black Canyon Boys and Girls Club

Welcome to Montrose! It’s the home of the Black Canyon, and the home of the Black Canyon Boys and Girls Club expansion.

Montrose Grant Coordinator , Kendall Cramer says, “It’s a $600,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. These are federal funds from the Community Block Grant.”

The Montrose City Council approved a resolution submitting the grant back in February to assist the club that has been a part of the community for 20 years. 600 children from surrounding areas have been using the Boys and Girls Club to learn how to be self-sufficient adults in a safe place, but there are club rules. “At least 51% of the beneficiaries have to be from low to moderate income means. So, they have to maintain that for at least 5 years,” says Cramer.

100% of these kids will get to make lifelong memories in a new building offering new hope, but the race to build funds to build the building continue, and the club is working. Cramer says, “They’ve fund-raised about $833,000 to date. They still have more fundraising to go, and hopefully we can begin construction in August of 2021.”

Right now there’s two-year waiting list for the current club location, and the very reason to expand. It’s for the kids. Cramer says, “It’ll either double to triple the amount of members that are able to come in there. Currently, right now they have a back log, and so, it’s not easy to get into the Boys and Girls Club.”
