GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — “We’re able to offer some funds that will both help them address both the increase in demand that they’re seeing in support services and also offset some of the financial losses they experienced due to COVID” voiced, Colorado Domestic Violence Program Director, Beth Collins.
The Colorado department of human services says a shocking 1 in 3 Coloradans reports some kind of sexual violence. 80 percent happen before age 25. a new grant from the CDHS will boost funds for 16 programs enhancing already free and confidential services.
Collins stated, “It includes advocacy, safety planning, access to advocates who have specialized ability to accompany folks to different types of court hearings.”
If a victim doesn’t feel comfortable meeting someone in person, they can now meet online.
“So rather than having to meet with someone in person, they can also provide better services for example online” Collins added.
Not only is CDHS giving financial support to groups, but they’re also providing hands on training to victims who want to help other survivors of domestic and sexual abuse.
Collins mentioned, “We’re also very excited that we’ve established a training and technical assistant contract with the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault.”
Program director, Beth Collins ensures me the state is going to do all it can to combat a growing problem. In 2019 Healthy Kids Colorado surveyed more than 46 thousand students and found about 10 percent of women and three percent of males report they were forced to have sex against their will. 10 percent experienced relationship violence. Collins says Colorado has a lot of work to do.
With these stimulus funds we’ll be able to continue this project for the next two years after, and we’ll also be able to get more clear on what are the needs of the communities and how can the Colorado Department of Human Resources be part of finding solutions.
