Democrats push universal background checks

Senate Democrats are demanding a vote on a bill that would require background checks before almost all gun purchases, including private sales.

The Universal Background Checks bill was passed by the House in February, but Republicans have so far blocked a vote on the bill in the Senate.  Today, Democratic lawmakers joined by  former Congresswoman—and gun violence victim—Gabby Giffords meet at the Capitol to ask Republicans to allow the Senate to take up the bill.
