JUCO always lives up to the hype. In day three of the 2019 Alpine Bank Junior College World Series, we saw a team go, a couple comebacks, a mery-rule and a walk-off.
The last game of the night was the craziest. No. 15 Navarro had No. 3 Walters State’s number the entire game with a 5-1 lead going into the eighth inning. However, the Senators scored three in the bottom of the eighth including a two-run bomb from Braydon Runion to cut the lead to one.
The bottom of the ninth was tense, a lead-off single with a couple of walks gave Michael Robinson a two outs with a 3-2 count situation with the bases loaded.
Robinson came through for Walters State delivering a 2-RBI single to left field to walk the game off. Senators advance in the winner’s bracket with a 6-5 win. Robinson now has six hits in just seven at-bats in the tournament.
Walters State has the day off on Tuesday and will play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against either Iowa Western or Central Arizona.
Navarro falls to the consolation bracket and will play Cowley at 3:00 p.m. pm Tuesday.
One team had to pack their bags on Monday and that was the Monroe Mustangs who fell to the Cowley Tigers 16-6 in seven innings.
Monroe came back from being down 2-0, to take a 5-2 lead, but with a grand slam from Cowley’s Blaze Brothers and a bunch of other runs, the Tigers put the horses in their stable. Fun fact, that was Brothers first homerun of the season as the Tigers have scored 48 runs in their first three games.
Central Arizona improved to (2-0) with a 10-2 win over Chattahoochee Valley. The Vaqueros have held their two opponents to four runs or less, and that’s impressive considering the Pirates scored 20 runs in their first game against New Mexico Junior College.
Teams that are now out: No. 16 Chipola, No. 14 New Mexico JC, Monroe
Unbeaten Teams: No. 3 Walters State, No. 9 Iowa Western, Central Arizona
