The Iowa Western Reivers methodically chipped away at a Walters State lead all night, eventually scoring four runs in the 9th inning to complete a comeback, 11-8 Wednesday in Day 5 of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
All eight of the Senators runs were unearned in the game. Walters State capitalized in the 3rd inning following two errors with two outs. Bryce Hodge reached home on a fielder error later in the inning. Brayden Combs capped off the punishing 3rd inning with a home run off and over the left field wall. The Senators held an 8-3 lead after the 4th inning.
The Reivers continually put men on in the second half of the game. In the sixth inning, Greg Bennett singled to left field, driving home Gibson Krzeminski and Cooper Bowman to cut the lead to 8-6. Bennett finished the night with 4 RBIs.
Iowa Western finally broke through in a nearly 30 minute top of the 9th inning. Jevon Mason utilized his first at-bat in the JUCO World Series by singling to right field, scoring two runs and putting the Reivers ahead 9-8. Iowa Western would score two more, and shut out Walters State in their half of the 9th to secure the victory.
The Reivers (51-9) are the lone undefeated team left in the JUCO World Series. Walters State (54-10) falls to the losers bracket.
In the afternoon game on Wednesday at Suplizio, the Central Arizona Vaqueros mercied Chattahoochee Valley 14-5 in eight innings to knock the Pirates out of postseason contention.
Once again, the Vaqs leaned on solid pitching. Starter Zane Strand earned the win on the day, throwing five innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five. Lucas Knowles came in for two innings of scoreless relief, only allowing one hit.
The Vaqueros Brenna Reback finished the day with 3 RBIs on 3-of-5 hitting. Hunter Jump was a triple shy of the cycle, smacking a home run over the left field wall in the 5th inning. 8 different position players recorded at least one RBI for the Vaqs.
