2 Die in Separate Gunnison River Accidents

Local News

Two women died in separate accidents on the Gunnison River on Friday.

According to the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office, a 31-year-old paddle boarder entered the river near County Road 32, and shortly after, lost control of her board in the swift current and got hung up on a tree in the water. The woman was taken to Gunnison Valley Hospital and then flown to Grand Junction. Authorities say they were later notified that she did not survive.

Hours later, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by the National Parks Service that they had located the victim of a kayaking accident near Colorado 149 and Colorado State Highway 50. The 65-year-old kayaker was recovered from the water and CPR was performed, but emergency responders were unable to revive her.

The identifications of both victims are being withheld, pending notification of next-of-kin.
