2020 Census Citizenship Question Blocked

Local News

The Supreme Court has decided to block a question about citizenship from the 2020 census.

The highest court ruled against adding the question which hasn’t been asked on the census since 1950.

The court ruled 5 to 4 in the decision to not include the question in 2020.

Data from the census helps decide congressional seats and distribution of federal funding to states and local municipalities.

The Trump Administration claims the citizenship question is necessary to comply with federal voting rights laws.

Critics argue it’s an attempt to intimidate non-citizens, Hispanic households and also lead to a under representation of minorities.
