GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – Several schools, including at least three in western Colorado, have taken shelter in place today across the state. Calls were made warning of an ongoing shooting, but it all turned out to be a dangerous hoax.
Calls ultimately came in at high schools in Delta, Cedaredge, and Montrose. The first calls went out about East Denver High School and Alamosa High School on the front range.
All schools took safety precautions.
The FBI refers to false calls like this as “swatting.”
They confirmed they are working with local law enforcement and issued a statement saying the agency takes the calls seriously because they put innocent people at risk and drain law enforcement resources.
The FBI often provides resources and may recommend cases for Federal Prosecution.
