Arrest Made In Connection To Sunday Morning Shooting Incident

Update: The Mesa County Coroner has identified the 26-year-old shooting victim as Brandon Sanchez from Grand Junction. The Coroner says he died from a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled the death a homicide.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says a man involved in a Sunday morning fatal shooting has been arrested in Garfield County. The man arrested allegedly entered the home, assaulted and injured another man in a residence in the 3100 block of Chipeta Avenue in Grand Junction, but is not the person believed to have fatally shot another man in the residence.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a woman in the home grabbed a gun during the incident and the gun went off, killing a 26-year-old man who may have entered the home with the man who was arrested on Monday.

MESA COUNTY, Colo – A man believed to be involved in the Sunday morning incident where a person was shot and killed was arrested in Garfield County this afternoon.

Eric Julian Martinez, 30, was arrested for Assault in the First Degree (Class 3 Felony), and Criminal Extortion (Class 4 Felony). 

Investigators believe Martinez entered a residence on the 3100 block of Chipeta Ave with a 26-year-old male Sunday morning. Martinez is believed to have assaulted a 27-year-old male living at the address. The 27-year-old male was taken to an area hospital for his injuries. 

A 34-year-old female was present for the assault and grabbed a gun from the residence. Investigators believe a confrontation happened and the gun fired. The circumstances around this confrontation are still being investigated. The 26-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound, and died of his injuries. His identity will be released by the Mesa County Coroner's office once an autopsy is completed and next of kin is notified. 

Investigators continue to conduct interviews and evaluate evidence collected regarding the incident. The case remains under investigation. 

Martinez is currently being held in the Garfield County Detention Facility on a No Bond Hold until first appearance.
