Beef industry impacts during the COVID-19 pandemic

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – On Tuesday the Trump Administration invoked The Defense Production Act to deliver additional PPE to keep workers safe in meat-processing plants. This order also allows meat-processing plants to remain open, as the nation confronts growing food supply disruptions.

KREX 5 and FOX 4 spoke to local meat producers to find out what customers need to know regarding supply concerns and safety.

“This is a new challenge for us, the supply chain is full, the bottleneck is in the processing piece,” says beef rancher, Janie VanWinkle. Employees of several large meat processing plants in the country are contracting COVID-19. One example includes the JBS Meat Processing Plant in Greeley.

Despite concerns at meat-processing plants, one local butcher is not worried about a major meat supply shortage. “There’s no need for it. There’s plenty of supply. This does not need to be like the toilet paper issue.” -Phil Emerson, owner of Quality Meat Company in Grand Junction.
