GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Beginning on October 10 and lasting until December 16, 2022, the City of Grand Junction’s leaf removal service is available to all city residents.

Raking leaves onto the street instead of bagging them to be dumped in the landfill is a quick method to get rid of them, and it is a free service offered to city residents. The leaves are gathered and taken to Mesa County where they are composted and utilized to enhance planting soil. Removing leaves maintains the aesthetic appeal of the city while enabling grass to breathe, lowering the risk of leaves clogging storm drains, and maintaining the beauty of the city.

Only single-family homes located inside city limits are eligible for this program. There are five distinct sections of the city, each with a designated rake-out date. On dates designated for the rake-out of leaves, leaves must be 18″ from the curb by 7 a.m. Within three days after that date, weather allowing, city vacuum trucks will collect the leaves. For pick-up, only leaves and pine needles are permitted. Rake-Out Date Schedule for 2022 (PDF)

The rake-out dates for that area are included on a postcard that is delivered to city residents the first week of October. The Transportation Map’s “search all layers” box may be used by residents to enter an address to verify leaf pick-up locations, or they can consult the 2022 Leaf Areas Map (PDF).

On November 24, the day before Thanksgiving, and the following day, November 25, 2022, no leaves will be cleaned up.

For recycling at the Mesa County Organic Materials Composting plant, this initiative has previously gathered more than 10,000 cubic yards of leaves.
