CMU 20,000 Asks to Keep North Avenue’s Name Unchanged

Local News

A big development in the battle for the name of the roadway currently known as North Avenue.  CMU 20,000– the group which originally proposed changing the name of North Avenue to University Boulevard– has asked the City Council to keep North Avenue, North Avenue.

In a letter obtained by News Channel 5, sent by the organization to Mayor Rick Taggart and the rest of the Grand Junction City Council, they called the request a “distraction” from the rest of efforts that CMU 20,000 aims for.

“When an objective instead creates division within the community, we believe an appropriate course of action is to pause and then explore how the community’s common goals can be achieved through different means….”  the letter said in part.

The letter asks the council to form a five member task force to generate ideas on increasing the visibility of the university made up of North Avenue and 12th Street business owners as well as a city planning department member, city council member, and a CMU representative.

The City Council will discuss the matter at their meeting Wednesday, October 18th.
