Fruita, CO – The Saddlehorn Picnic area, Canyon Rim Trail, Window Rock Trail and the Saddlehorn loop road within Colorado National Monument will be closed Wednesday, November 4, 2020 from dawn until 5:00 p.m. for helicopter operations. Liberty Cap Trail from the junction of Ute Canyon Trail to above the Liberty Cap rock formation will also be closed. The monument staff has contracted a helicopter to move trail material to continue rehabilitation work on Liberty Cap Trail.
In September, the monument staff successfully used a helicopter operation to move the first set of rock to areas along the trail near the mesa edge. The middle section of Liberty Cap trail has been closed Monday through Friday since September and will continue to be closed weekdays through December 4, 2020. The trail will be open on the weekends. Liberty Cap Trail has suffered years of wear and tear from thousands of hikers as well as from natural erosional processes.
The A Loop of the Saddlehorn Campground, Monument Canyon Trail and Corkscrew Trail will remain open, however, the sound of the helicopter as it moves through this portion of the monument will be noticeable.
