Fire crews were making progress Thursday on a blaze burning in Garfield County.
The Houston Mountain Fire was first reported around 5 p.m. Wednesday, about six miles southwest of Rifle.
David Boyd with the Bureau of Land Management said better mapping on Thursday revealed that the fire had covered 44 acres, although crews were able to stop its growth on Wednesday night.
Officials were working to build a containment line which they hoped would be complete on either Thursday night or Friday morning.
Authorities say structures and natural gas wells in the area are not immediately threatened.
