DELTA, Colo. (KREX) — Flu season, on top of the COVID crisis, is pushing Delta County’s health system to a breaking point. As of this week, Delta Health’s intensive care unit reached 100 percent capacity.

With limited staff, it’s been all hands on deck for Delta Health. Eight people are hospitalized with COVID-19, and, now, Delta Health is also starting to see rising cases of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Delta County’s positive COVID-19 cases are on a downward trend but with beds already full, staff at Delta Health are wary, knowing the disease can be deadly and case numbers can change quickly.

“It changes daily. Yes, right now, our ICU is at capacity which is concerning for us, but we still have beds available and we still are providing really excellent care,” Jacqueline Davis, MHA assures, “Even though we are at capacity, not everybody has COVID, but it is really important for the communities to take those precautions to be safe, to be vaccinated if they can, and to have a really good holiday season.”

Providing quality healthcare is a group effort. Delta Health is part of the Combined Hospital Transfer Center and continues partnering with St. Mary’s Regional Center to ensure every patient gets quality care.
