Grand Junction, CO - The Mesa County Coroner has identified the man found dead last Friday in his jail cell at the Mesa County Detention Facility, and says the death was a suicide.
The inmate has been identified as 39-year-old Carlos Lopez-Martinez. The coroner's office says Lopez-Martinez hung himself, but provided no other details.
On Friday, July 27, The Mesa County Sheriff's Office said that a male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at around 11:40 Friday morning during routine security checks.
The Sheriff's Office says that deputies and medical staff tried to resuscitate him, but he was eventually pronounced dead.
Mesa County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Megan Terlecky tells KREX 5 News that an investigation is ongoing. She says that Lopez-Martinez was not on suicide watch, was in his cell alone, and was discovered during the routine cell checks done every 30 minutes.
He was being held on several charges including Aggravated Robbery and Felony Menacing related to an incident in Clifton earlier this month in which two men pistol-whipped a woman outside her home and stole her purse.
