MESA COUNTY, Colo.- - The Colorado Department of Education announced the pupil count for the 2016-2017 school year. As a state, there was an increase by 5,907 students from last year, which brought the state total enrollment to 905,019.
Out of the top 15 largest school districts, Mesa County School District 51 ranks in at number 12. District 51 has held this spot ever since the enrollment began counting years ago.
The Mesa County School District 51 increased by adding 201 students this year, for a grand total of 22,105. District 51 officials said this is the biggest increase in students since the 2008-2009 school year.
Emily Shockley with the Mesa County School District 51 explained, "sometimes when you have an increase in enrollment, it just means that more people are moving in or that some people who have been private or home schooled decided to come to the district."
The school enrollment count is taken on a single day near the beginning of October; however, District 51 officials described they conducted their count on September 21, 2016.
