GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — We are delighted to announce that we have selected Dr. Brian Hill to become the next superintendent of District 51 schools! The board interviewed Dr. Hill Wednesday evening and, based on his qualifications, determined he was the absolute best candidate to lead the district forward once current superintendent Diana Sirko retires next year.
Dr. Hill has served as our assistant superintendent since July 2019 and has impressed us greatly from Day 1. His previous experience includes 11 years in the Austin Independent School District (AISD) in Austin, Texas, where he worked his way up from teacher to assistant principal to principal to special assistant to the AISD superintendent. Dr. Hill earned a bachelor’s from East Texas Baptist University and both Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He was the 2019 Region XIII Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association Member of the Year, was named AISD’s Teacher of Promise his first year on the job, and was AISD’s Campus Teacher of the Year in 2010-11, among other honors.
We want to thank Dr. Sirko for her service over the past two-and-a-half years. She came to our district in 2018 as an interim superintendent and the board asked her to stay on as permanent superintendent to guide us through some of the most challenging times our district and public education in general have ever experienced. Dr. Sirko is not set to retire until June 2022, but we wanted to get a head start on selecting her replacement and retain the incredible talent already in our district. More than a dozen school districts in Colorado alone are searching for new superintendents, creating competition for top candidates.
As a board, we look forward to keeping Dr. Sirko with us to finish out her 46-year career in public education and we look forward to the next chapter of our district’s history with Dr. Hill. If you have not already, we invite you to welcome him to our community and get to know the next superintendent of D51!
