Eastbound Beavertail Tunnel Remains Closed After Semi Truck Slams Into Tunnel and Catches Fire

Local News

A semi truck carrying a tanker trailer transporting diesel crashed into the Beavertail Tunnel on Eastbound Interstate 70 and burst into flames at approximately 1:32pm on Wednesday, October 14th.

A Colorado State Patrol official says a passerby was first on the scene and pulled the single male driver out of the tractor before it was completely engulfed in flames.

CSP says the single male driver was transported to Saint Mary’s hospital with serious injuries.

The tractor is destroyed, but the diesel tanker remains intact.

Beavertail Tunnel eastbound remains closed until Colorado Department of Transportation crews evaluate the integrity of the structure to make sure it’s safe for travel.

Traffic continues to flow through an alternate route eastbound on a frontage road.
