GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Wholesale natural gas prices are down right now, and experts expect energy bills will be lower this year compared to last winter. But even with lower energy bills, higher rents and inflation could leave some struggling to pay bills. Luckily, there are programs in place to help.

Income-qualified customers can apply for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program, or LEAP.

LEAP is a federal program that assists with a portion of heating costs.

Xcel also offers gas and electric affordability programs. Enrollment in those programs is automatic once you’re approved for LEAP.

You can apply for LEAP assistance through the Colorado PEAK website.
