Fire burning in Pine Gulch, smoke seen behind bookcliffs

UPDATE: The Pine Gulch fire continues to burn in the bookcliffs. A Bureau of Land Management Spokesperson tells us that as of Tuesday morning, the fire has now burned about 3,600 acres and is 5% contained.

KREX 5 captured footage of the fire on the America’s Mattress Live Tower Camera late Sunday afternoon, you can see that in the clip above.

This fire started Friday night at about 5 pm and according to a BLM spokesperson, this is likely a lightning strike fire that occurred late Friday.

MESA COUNTY, Colo. –Just after 5:30 pm Friday, KREX 5 got reports of fire smoke seen from behind the bookcliff area. According to a BLM Fire spokesperson, the fire is burning in Pine Gulch. As of 7:00 pm, the fire is 20 acres. Two BLM engines and one Mesa County engine was dispatched to the fire location, along with two helicopters, (type 1 and 3), for water drops.

More crews are expected to respond Saturday if needed. No structures are threatened at this time.
