Grand Junction High School Student And Family Speak Out After Assault

Local News

GRAND JUNCTION- An arrest has been made following a brutal assault captured on a cell phone involving two Grand Junction High School Students.

The Grand Junction Police Department tells KREX 5/Fox 4 that a minor has been charged with third degree assault.

The assault happened Tuesday during one of GJHS’ off-campus lunch periods at a local Domino’s. The victim’s mother says she told school officials her daughter is afraid to return to school if the student being charged with the assault remains on campus.

“I think that she should be expelled,” said Shannon Dominguez. “Five days suspension is pretty much a vacation for a kid, and I don’t think that’s harsh enough consequences.”

The victim says she did not know the girl who attacked her. She says the girl started following her and a friend after they were joking around outside Domino’s.

“If you’re bullying someone, and if you continue to do it, you should get help,” said Kaylynn Dominguez. “Maybe you have something going on in your life, but it doesn’t mean that you have to take it out on someone else.”

Kaylynn’s mother tells us years ago doctors found a benign cyst on Kalynn’s brain. In the assault, Kaylynn suffered a concussion, among other injuries. Shannon is thankful her daughter is making a recovery.

“With as many blows as she took to the head with that girl’s knee, it very well could have ruptured that area. So, she could have been killed.”

Kaylynn will eventually make her way back to school. She’s very grateful for all of her friends and the community’s support for making a difficult recovery a little bit easier.

“I just want to say thank you for all your love and support, and just hope that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
