Grandmother Speaks Out On Bear Attack

Local News

A family member of the five year old girl who was attacked by a bear Sunday morning speaks out.

“She loves everybody, just friendly, real talkative, loves to be outside, likes to play,” said Bonnie Williams, the grandmother of the little girl who was attacked.

It wasn’t until later Sunday when Williams found out her granddaughter was mauled by a bear.

“Absolute terror. We knew when they said that it was on D Road on East Orchard Mesa and that it was a five year old little girl.”

A terror that left her with many questions and concerns — “It destroyed us because you know you see this and she’s five and you don’t know what happened or why or how bad it was.”

Williams said it was just a few days earlier she and the little girl’s family were warned about recent wildlife activity in the area.

“This person had went and told people ‘Hey be on the lookout. It’s either a mountain lion or bear, but it killed my chickens. There’s a wild animal out here.'”

The bear that Colorado Parks and Wildlife is confident that attacked the girl has been killed and is currently getting DNA results.

“Sad to see any wild animal put down, but in the same instance I am glad they got it. Because now they can do a necropsy. Now they can find out and make sure that it didn’t have rabies or something else that it could’ve past on to my five year old grandaughter.”

Until then Williams will have to wait to be confirmed this bear is without a doubt the animal that attacked her granddaughter.

Tuesday afternoon, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said they have concluded their investigation and no charges will be filed against the parents.

The sheriff’s office says the father now says he was wrong when he told a 911 dispatcher that his daughter had been camping in their backyard and backed up his wife’s report that the little girl went into the backyard after hearing a noise she thought was their dog.
